Province
in the north-east of the Netherlands. Originally called 'Groningen en
Ommelanden', referring to the city of Groningen and surrounding area,
as the province started as a territory ruled from the city of
Groningen, which itself was a settlement with Saxonians from Drenthe.
The area had until ca. 400 been populated by Frisians, whose territory
was cut in two by the Saxon colonization. The power of the city
prevented the true development of other towns, and to this day the
province has largely retained its agricultural character. The province
was given its current borders in 1814. Population is mostly protestant,
divided over several denominations, but there are a few catholic
enclaves. |
