Located near the ruins of the castle of the counts of Egmond stands the reformed church of Egmond aan den Hoef, the name of which, Slotkapel, indicates that it once served as the chapel of the castle. The church, a one-aisled building in simple Gothic style, was probably built in 1430 on the location of a burned-down 13th-century predecessor and was enlarged in 1480. In 1574 it was largely destroyed by protestant bands. In 1633-1634 it was rebuilt, at least part of it was, to serve as a reformed church.
