Heerde (G): Reformed church or Johanneskerk
Heerde must have had a church already in the 12th century, but nothing is known about it. The origins of today's church are in the 15th century, when the late-Gothic choir and the tower were built. The aisleless nave from this period, which was of equal width as the choir, was in 1841 replaced by a much wider one in neo-Classical style. In 1869 the church was renovated and it seems this is when the tower lost its Gothic character, with all its pointed arches replaced by rounded ones. Old pictures show the tower with at least four different spires. The current one was added in 1907, after the tower was heightened. Also the balustrade was added in this period. The nave was replaced in 1923. The new nave, designed in Expressionist style by H.A. Pothoven, has a ground-plan the shape of a Greek cross, with four equally short arms. To make space for the eastern arm ghe old choir was shortened by three meters.
